Top Rated Drug Detox Program in New Hanover

Drug addiction is not just for criminals and degenerates, even if that is how it is portrayed in the media. Anybody can easily become addicted to drugs, in a variety of ways. Some people will try a substance out of curiosity, others will use a friend’s prescription medications while partying, and others will be prescribed pain killers that, even when used correctly, can lead to physical dependence.

Common signs of addiction include:

  • Noticing withdrawal symptoms when you don’t have access to the substance
  • Craving the substance, or constantly thinking about when you can use it again
  • Prioritizing drug use over other responsibilities, letting it get in the way of family obligations, work or school, and social interactions or hobbies
  • Continuing to use the substance even when it causes troubles in your relationship, with your health, or with your finances

If you are worried about a loved one’s drugs and alcohol addiction, or if you are these symptoms of addiction sound familiar to you, it may be time to seek professional help. Residents of New Hanover County, North Carolina can call Quantum to learn more about alcohol detox and drug detox programs in your area, offering outpatient rehab programs and care to those suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. What Is Detox Like?

The way your detox goes depends on what types of substances you were using, and the severity of your addiction. It may be mild, with some withdrawal symptoms that you can manage easily with some light coaching and support, or it may be severe, with serious life-threatening withdrawal symptoms like flu-like symptoms and fever, serious stomach issues, seizures, or delirium tremens.

Many people fear going through withdrawal, and will continue to use substances just to avoid the discomfort, but if you enter a medical detox program in a treatment facility that offers substance abuse and mental health care in inpatient treatment and/or outpatient treatment, you will be kept safe and as comfortable as possible, and will not suffer unnecessarily as your body gets rid of toxins.

What to Expect During Drug Detox?

During detox, you will likely live inside a drug rehab in New Hanover for the entirety of your treatment plan, which may last for a few days or a few weeks. The length of time you spend in the addiction treatment centers depends on factors like:

  • How long you were using the drugs, how much you were using each time, and the frequency you were using them
  • Whether you were mixing drugs and alcohol or using several types of drugs together at the same time
  • Whether you have a co-occurring disorder, with mental health conditions alongside the alcohol and drug substance abuse that need dual diagnosis treatment

Depending on the detox treatment center you go to, medical detox may be provided. A medical detox is recommended for most people with a substance use disorder, because there will be benefits like:

  • Having a safe and sober place to stay while you are at your most vulnerable during detox, with no temptations or external stress placed upon you
  • 24-hour medical oversight to make sure your withdrawal symptoms don’t become dangerous to your health including heart, breathing, and mental health issues
  • Prescription doses of certain medications may be provided to help you stay comfortable, rest better, and avoid health complications like seizures and high blood pressure
  • Behavioral therapy, talk therapy, and/or psychiatric care to help you get through difficult emotions, stress, and fear you may have
  • Dual diagnosis treatments may begin for people with mental health conditions occurring alongside addiction rehab. This may include targeted therapy and/or beginning psychiatric medication, depending on your unique circumstances

Through medical detox you will clear the drugs and alcohol from your brain and body, restoring the body back to its natural state and preparing the mind for psychosocial treatments.

For people detoxing from a more severe drug addiction, or for those who have a benzodiazepine addiction, alcohol addiction, or opioid addiction, there is a longer-term medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plan for detoxing which will provide safe, prescription doses of FDA-approved medications that will help you taper off of these powerful drugs a little at a time.

These medications also help control cravings and block the euphoric effects of these substances so even if you do relapse you will not get the same effect, causing the addiction to wane. Common medications used in MAT programs include Buprenorphine, Suboxone, Naloxone, Vivitrol, Disulfiram, Acamprosate, Naltrexone, and certain benzodiazepines. When used alongside mental health, behavioral health, physical health, and spiritual wellness programs, MAT is an extremely effective way to stop using these highly addictive substances.

Symptoms of Detox by Drug Type

Each type of drug has its own set of withdrawal symptoms that can be remedied with specific health treatments, medications, and holistic care like stretching and massage. Some of the most common withdrawal symptoms for the following drugs are:

Benzos

  • Increased heart rate
  • Shaking
  • Anxiety/panic
  • Insomnia/trouble sleeping
  • Light and sound sensitivity
  • Strong drug cravings

A slow taper through a MAT plan is recommended for benzodiazepine withdrawal management, beginning in detox and continuing through inpatient and outpatient programs

Opioids (Heroin)

  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety and rapid heart rate
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting
  • Severe drug cravings

Opioid and heroin addiction is not an easy addiction to escape, which is why a longer-term MAT program with medical intervention is often prescribed.

Stimulants (Cocaine, Meth etc)

  • Hallucinations and paranoia
  • Restlessness, insomnia and nightmares
  • Drug-induced psychosis
  • Muscle pain
  • Tremors
  • Malaise or lethargy
  • Strong drug cravings

Substance use issues like crack cocaine and meth addiction are mostly psychological in nature, so a rehab program including therapy and behavioral treatments, along with a strong relapse prevention plan, are recommended.

Bath Salts

  • Brain fog and reduced cognitive function
  • Delirium and hallucinations
  • Insomnia
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Nausea and vomiting

“Bath salts” are psychoactive synthetic street drugs that cause mental health issues and psychosis, so a stay in inpatient treatment is usually recommended to help patients avoid suicidal behavior and violence.

Marijuana

  • Depression or malaise
  • Decreased appetite
  • Anxiety, restlessness, and irritability
  • Tremors
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever and chills

  • DXM/Cough Syrup
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Cold flashes
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Drug cravings

Dextromethorphan is the active ingredient in some cough syrups, with psychoactive and stimulant properties. Withdrawal is often uncomfortable physically and psychologically.

Ecstasy/Molly/MDMA

  • Depression or anxiety
  • Confusion, with memory and cognitive impairment
  • Paranoia
  • Insomnia
  • Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Fatigue

Because ecstasy and MDMA are party drugs, they are often associated with other drug abuse and are also often cut with other drugs the user does not know about, so withdrawal symptoms may vary unexpectedly, making it a good idea to enter a medical detox plan to be safe.

Fentanyl

  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Insomnia
  • Severe drug cravings
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Restlessness

Substance use disorders involving fentanyl are often severe, requiring MAT treatment plans and/or intensive medical care during detox.

Hallucinogens

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Stiff muscles
  • Depressed breathing
  • Headache
  • Convulsions
  • Drug cravings

Although not enough is known about many hallucinogenic drugs, some like ketamine or PCP have addictive properties and may require substance abuse treatment to quit safely.

Oxycodone

  • High blood pressure and rapid heartbeat
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Insomnia and restlessness
  • Strong drug cravings

As a prescription painkiller that is an opioid drug, treatment approaches to oxycodone are similar to those of heroin or fentanyl, with a combination of medications, behavioral health care, doctor oversight, and therapy.

Prescription Drugs

Prescription drug treatment differs depending on which substance(s) are being abused. There are several prescriptions that may create a physical or psychological dependence, even when used as directed by your physician.

Because prescription drugs are often linked to mental health disorders, dual diagnosis for co-occurring mental illness and alcohol/ drug addiction is often recommended in an integrated rehab program for substance abuse and mental health.

Acute Detox

Residential inpatient acute detox programs are for people who are going through withdrawal that is severe in nature, with serious medical and/or psychiatric issues, difficult withdrawal symptoms, or who are experiencing medical complications due to substance abuse and withdrawal. Through personalized treatment, medication, and 24-hour medical care, a person in acute detox will be kept safe and comfortable, with treatments to ensure you stay hydrated and well-nourished as you get all the support you need to get you through this difficult but necessary part of most drug and alcohol rehab and recovery programs.

Sub Acute Detox

Sub-acute detox programs are customized care programs that occur inside a recovery center but are much less intense than acute detox. For example, if you had a mild cocaine addiction, it would still be beneficial to detox in an inpatient setting to avoid the temptations in your day-to-day life, but you would not need the same level of intense care from your treatment provider as a person with a severe opioid and alcohol addiction might. You will receive an appropriate level of care for your unique individual symptoms.
